First Special Service Force PROTOTYPE V42 Fighting Knife

This is the very scarce First Special Service Force PROTOTYPE fighting knife and the original scabbard.

This knife is very similar in design to the V-42. It appears to have been made by Case, however there are no markings. Similarities in blade, handle, pommel and scabbard design are unmistakable.

The crossguard and pommel are cast zinc, which has deteriorated over time, and was very fragile in the field. There are chips and cracks and general wear, as shown in the close-up image here. We have three examples of this style and type of knife on this page, all are virtually identical from a construction standpoint, the conditions vary.

The scabbard is in use condition with signs of wear and identified with some initials. Note the similarity to the 1SSF scabbard of the V42, with the notable exceptions of no staples. Here is a overall view of the back.

First Special Service Force ULSTER Folding Knife

An Authentic and Original First Special Service Force Folding Knife Rare TypeI/II Transitional Variant

This is the Type I Ulster transitional variant of the knife carried by the members of the 1SSF. The Philips head blade was for adjusting ski bindings and was peculiar to the 1SSF (and later the elite mountain troops) of the US Army during WWII.

This knife is the early 1942 issued knife with the flat US-marked staple, and the clipped point on the large blade. It is illustrated and described in Cole's 1979 U. S. Military Knives: Book III on page 50. That page is shown here for reference and comparison. The Type I is the top one.

The knife is as described and shown in the Type I illustration above, excepting the staple, which is identical to the Type II knife.

The condition is near very good throughout, with very minor surface rust spotting that could be easily cleaned up, if desired. The long blade has been sharpened often and it is not as long as it was when issued. The shorter blade has the tip broken off. Note especially the placement of the blade lifter on the large blade, and the shorter clip point than is shown on the illustration of the Type II above. Here are views of the left and rightsides. The bottom of the knife was engraved by an etcher indicating it was used by the trooper who became a Shop Teacher at a high school after the war.

Of historical note, we have a photograph of a 1SSF trooper that shows the knife in carry. PLEASE NOTE: The photograph is NOT a part of this offering, it is shown only for informational purposes. This is an extremely rare photograph, since this knife is rarely seen in carry. Because of the position of the trooper as  he leans to light his wounded buddy's cigarette, the knife slipped out of his pocket and can be seen hanging by the staple. Note the USA CANADA patch has been censored out by the US Signal Corps. The knife is hanging at the trooper's left side.
