Reichskanzlei War Room Tapestry

This is a most unusual offering.  It is one of the six elaborate tapestries that were on the walls of the War Room in the Chancellery.

From the Dick W. "Duffy" Klaer provenance (as printed in Treasure Trove: The Looting of the Third Reich, page 189):

"As for the tapestries -- they were hanging in the war planning room of the Chancellery. There were six of them - two each on the side walls and one each (smaller ones) on the end walls. The room was about 14' by 28', there was a very large, long table and about 20 chairs in the room all of which were broken all to hell by the bombings or busted up by the Russian soldiers.

Near the end of the war, I was teaching at the Infantry Officer's School at Fountainbleau, France. From there I took the last class of graduates to Potsdam where we were responsible for setting up the Potsdam Conference. It was at the Conference where I met two Russian officers who took me to Berlin before the Americans were allowed - so you see I got first crack at a lot of Nazi memorabilia. /s/ Duffy Klaer, Marcellus, MI."

The tapestry measures 48 by 48 inches. This is a view of the back and a close-up of the central emblem and a close-up of the staining and oak leaves detail and a view of the edgework. There are some minor to moderate stains from when it was originally recovered.

WELLNER "RK" Monogram Silver Service

The Wellner pattern very heavy silver plated items have been produced with rolled (impressed) monograms and engraved monograms. This silver was made with two sets of initials -- either "AH" or "RK". The AH variants have been found in a number of locations that Hitler was known to frequent, including Berlin, Munich, Nuremberg, and the Obersalzberg. There are a number of period photographs of GIs carrying off pieces of this silver pattern.

Note also that there were two variations of the eagle on the "RK" emblem. One with "straight wings" and one with "swept wings". For simplicity, we will refer to the straight-wing variant as the "1st Pattern" and the swept-wing variant as the "2nd Pattern" Most of the "AH" monogram Wellner pattern silver encountered has the 2nd pattern wing style. The second wing style is also seen in two versions, one impressed and the other engraved.

A close-up of the "straight wing" RK variant of the Wellner pattern (impressed style) is shown below:

A close-up of the "swept wing" RK and AH variants of the Wellner pattern (engraved style) are shown below:

The WELLNER maker mark as seen on most of their silverware of both patterns and variants. Note the WELLNER name is followed by a capacity (in some cases) and the silver content (in pennyweight) for the piece. The maker marks may appear on the back or bottom of the piece, or are occasionally seen on the serving service -- at the bottom or side opposite the monogram, especially in the case of trays. There are a number of WELLNER marks, which include "AWS" "WELLNER SILBER" and several marks, which include an elephant and the crescent moon, crown, silver content and displayed eagle along with the WELLNER name. In the case of the Wellner RK silver, we have only observed it with simply the WELLNER name, as shown below.

Please note: This particular pattern is subject to availability.

RKP-01
RK Seating Chart
Reichskanzlei Formal Dinner Seating Chart of March 7th, 1939

This dinner was to celebrate the first anniversary of the defeat of the plebiscite and the successful annexation of the year before. Note that Keitel is seated directly opposite Hitler at the head of the table, with Frau Keitel at his left hand side.

This document was gathered by a member of the US Army Counter Intelligence Corps on September 7th, 1945. It has an annotation in pencil where and when it was found.

It has some wrinkles and minor signs of age, but the paper is high rag content and very durable, so the wrinkles may press out. Most of the wrinkling is at the lower right side of the back page.

It measures 9-3/8 by 13-3/4 inches folded as shown at the top, and 13-3/4 by 18-3/4 open as shown below.

Engraved RK and AH Monograms

A number of WELLNER silver pieces were recovered from the burned ruins of the Reichskanzlei when the US GIs arrived some time after the Russians had secured the city. Both the RK and AH 2nd Pattern variants were found, among them a gravy pitcher and several trays in covered and uncovered versions. Because both monogram patterns were recovered from the Reichskanzlei, they are shown together in this section. On some of the pieces the previous owner had attempted to polish out the burns. Those pieces are noted with the description.

These envelopes were recovered from files captured from the Reichskanzlei. The contents were separated for intelligence analysis and the covers were considered of no consequence and discarded. They were saved by one of the CIC as souvenirs. These particular covers are addressed to Adolf Hitler at the RK in Berlin. We have a very small number of similar covers addressed to Hitler at Haus Wachenfeld and in Obersalzberg, and Munich. If you are interested in them, please email us for details. Some of them are listed here.

The condition of the covers is near-excellent with signs of routine handling. They are slit on three sides (to ensure the complete contents were exposed). There are a variety of sizes (from 2-1/2 by 5 inches to 6 by 5 inches), colors, postmarks, and dates, most dating to the Christmas season of 1933.

These covers make outstanding -- and affordable -- period accent pieces for RK related framed groupings.
