This page contains a sampling of our extensive collection of US militaria from all wars, and all branches of the services, including related supporting groups, such as the Red Cross, USO, and similar service organizations with close ties to the US military.
The US militaria is categorized by service, and then by era. US Army items are located together, for example, and then sorted by era, from oldest to latest. If you are looking for specific pieces, you may need to check to ensure the item you need is not in a location you may expect on the site. As usual, if you have specific questions or items you seek, please email us for details. Include details of what you are looking for, to save everyone time and effort.
Patches and Distinctive Unit Insignia are on separate pages. Uniforms and uniform accessories have been moved here.
You can email us at snyderstr@aol.com with questions. Use the links below to jump to specific categories of items.
PLEASE NOTE: Most of our Post WWI, WWII, and Cold War wing badges are in a separate section of our Gallery. You can view them in a slideshow format. Each wing in the Gallery shows availability, price and detailed descriptions. Included are wings from the USAAC, USAAF, USN, USCG, and some civilian and defense-oriented organizations. There is also integrated RSS feed compatibility in that section.
This is a precision set of binocular optics once belonging to Charles Bare Gatewood (USMA Class of 1877), First Lieutenant, US Army.
An excerpt from the Arlington National Cemetery website follows:
Born at Woodstock, Virginia, in 1853, he was from a military family. He was appointed to West Point in 1873, graduated four years later and was assigned to the 6th Cavalry. From then until the fall of 1885 he was almost constantly on field duty in New Mexico and Arizona. He saw combat in the Victorio campaign of 1879-80 in Mexico, received special commendation from Colonel A. P. Morrow for his efforts. He was a member of Crook's expedition into Sonora in 1883, which resulted in Chatto's surrender, serving in (Emmet) Crawford's command. For this he was mentioned in War Department orders. In 1885 in published General Orders in Arizona, described as having "seen more active duty in the field with Indian scouts than any other officer of his length of service in the Army." The rest of the story can be read here.
He is perhaps best known as the officer that convinced the Indian War Chief Geronimo to surrender and cease hostilities between the Apache and the US government.

This pair of binoculars dates to the Civil War (prior to 1864) was made in France by the highly respected maker of the French firm of Bardou in Paris. It is maker marked on the crane with a small impressed G.B. letters flanking a caduceus. The other markings identify them as U.S. Army Signal Glass O.C.S.O. with Signal Glass in script letters and the others in block letters. The OCSO is an abbreviation used during the latter part of the Civil War (1864-1865) for the Office of the Chief Signal Officer, the issuing authority. There is no serial number apparent anywhere, which dates these glasses as being made and imported prior to the 1864 shipment that was requested to have serial numbers in an April 14, 1864 letter to the firm. (Cited in footnote 5 here).
The body of the binoculars is completely made of highly polished brass. The knurled adjustment knob is Bakelite. It has a small crack the length of the knob but is does not impair function. There are textured black leather grips that appear to have been replaced at some point in the distant past. The original case shows some moderate to heavy wear from rubbing to the exterior on the front and back sides from long carry.
The optics are bright and clear, with no signs of parallax or collimation distortion. These are views of the eyepieces and objectives. Eyepiece lenses are about 15mm. Objectives are about 55mm. The brass at the objective end slides forward as sunshades. They measure 6-1/4 by 5 inches retracted for carry and 9 inches long when eye tubes and shades are fully extended.
This is an outstanding set of optics in remarkable condition. You will be very pleased to add these to your collection of mid-19th century U.S. Army optics.

This is an Indian Wars era rawhide and leather horse saddle. It is completely handmade and stitched, with brass rivets and iron nails retaining the leather and rawhide to the wooden saddle tree.
The tree is completely covered with rawhide and the rawhide is covered on the seat with leather, with applied leather side skirts with some faint tooled decorations visible and leather stirrup straps and girth strap. This is a view from underneath on the back and front. These are views of the bottom and rear.
It measures 19 inches from the short pommel (no horn) to the cantle. It measures 12 inches wide across the seat at the widest part.
The stirrups are wooden with no boot covers. They do not appear to have ever had any attached.
The leather and rawhide is in fair to good condition, with crazing and cracking to the leather. The rawhide is in good to very good condition, with some of the stitching split out as shown in the images.

This is a very rare Civil War Model 1850 July 4th, 1863 dated presentation Ensign's sword.
The sword has a fascinating history, being presented to one of the original members the 77th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. His name appears in the 77th PA Vol Inf roster as assigned to Company C of the regiment. Henry P. Kreps (aka H. P. Krebs), was recruited on 20 September, 1861 from Huntingdon County at the same time the officers and NCOs initially forming the company were mustered in. With the exception of a couple of officers transferring into the regiment, he was one of the first mustered into the first company forming the regiment.
The regiment was formed on August 1, 1861 under the command of Colonel Stumbaugh and assigned to the 2nd Division, 5th Brigade, Army of the Ohio (aka XXIII Corps) under the command of General Buell on 1 November, 1861. Company C of the 77th Regiment was the designated unit to bear the regimental colors. This is documented in the original history of the 77th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. The account of the 77th being named the Banner Regiment (20 March 1863) of General Buell's Army as a result of their actions at the Battle of Murfreesboro is also documented there; as is the account of the regimental color bearer being mortally wounded, and the colors recovered and carried by a 15-year old soldier until they were returned to the custody of Company C during the course of the Battle of Stone's Rive r. At this point, there is scant information regarding the colors and color bearers (designated as a sub-officer rank of Ensign) at the Battle of Liberty Gap (24 June 1863). Kreps (Krebs) was wounded in this action (apparently not seriously), as he was appointed Ensign on 4 July 1863. He continued his service until the expiration of his enlistment of three years. He was mustered out on 20 September 1864, shortly after the fall of Atlanta.
The sword bears the period inscription on the scabbard as:
Presented to Ensign H. P. Krebs
77th Penna Vols
by the National Union League
July 4th 1863
The transposition of the "b" and the "p" in Krebs/Kreps/Krepps is well-documented in the Kreps genealogy charts, as shown in this example. It was a common occurrence with this set of names throughout the 18th century, especially in Pennsylvania.
The sword is very elaborate with a number of outstanding features rarely encountered in a Civil War sword. It is a M1850 Staff & Field Officer's sword, with a very heavy saber curved blade, deeply etched on both sides with US martial designs. It is marked IRON PROOF on an etch on the spine at the ricasso. The sword is almost certainly a German W. Clauberg of Solingen design and manufacture, because of the distinctive spine fuller, the false edge, the quality of workmanship, wire-wrapped grip, and the 7-bar knuckle bow and shell style guard. Clauberg was known to have made a number of custom design brass fitted swords with identical features, including the U.S flanked by stands of arms etching and the E PLURIBUS UNUM stands of arms and Federal eagle motifs found on this sword.
The shell guard is of an eagle grasping a Federal shield in its claws, with a 13-star glory above and flanked by 8 standards (four on each side). It has a 7-bar design (5 on one side, two as loops on the other). The pommel has a deep pattern of oak leaves and acorns. The grip is black leather with four strands of wire (two singles flanking a twisted pair). There is some wear to the leather from age and carry. The brass is deeply tarnished throughout.
The blade measures 31 inches. The grip and guard measure 5-1/2 inches. There is a 1 inch ricasso, with a 21-3/4 wide fuller and a very narrow 12-1/2 inch spine starting from 5-1/2 inches from the ricasso. There is a 9 inch false edge from the tip to where the spine widens. The sword in the scabbard is 39 inches overall in the scabbard. It has no maker marks. The edges have not been sharpened, there are no nicks. The blade has some minor darkness from age.
These are views of the hangers front top and front bottom and the front and rear view of both. These are views of the drag, front and rear. The hangers are distinctive because of the skull and crossed bones over the standards on the bottom front hanger. Standards and flags are featured in virtually every part of this sword, including the outside of the drag with the inside depicting a horse mounted cavalry trooper in full charge. The throat has a flame motif which is echoed at the end of the etchings on the blade.
This is truly a spectacular sword and one worthy of any high-end Civil War staff officer's sword collection.
A related piece from the same estate is available separately, the 14K gold Ladies of GAR medal named to H. P. Krebs.

This is a very fancy 19th Century 1901 dated presentation Commanding Officer's sword.
The sword was presented to Captain John Coolbaugh, Commanding Company K, 9th Volunteer Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, National Guard of Pennsylvania.
This unit was mobilized for the Spanish-American War in 1898. Captain Coolbaugh remained after the unit was mustered out, eventually attaining the rank of major. He passed away on 23 May, 1934.
This sword is exceptionally fancy model, made by the noted American sword maker, The M. C. Lilley & Company in the late 19th century. It is complete and intact including the original mother of pearl grips, except for the twisted pair wire wrap around the grips, which is absent. It could easily be replaced.
The sword has a folding clam-shell style guard, with separately applied Federal eagle surrounded by a laurel wreath on a spray of 13 arrows on the right side guard and US surrounded by a wreath of oak leaves and acorns on the folding left side guard. The left side guard is retained in the open position by a robust button release. The knuckle bow is very fancy with the bow and finial emanating from the jaws of a pair of lion heads. A snake is entwined on the upper part of the knuckle bow. The pommel has a stack of arms and armor on both sides.
The blade has a mountain lion maker mark on the right side and The M. C, LILLEY & CO. COLUMBUS O. maker mark etched on the left side at the ricasso. Both sides of the blade are etched with military motifs with U.S. markings, US flags, stacks of arms and the name CAPTAIN JOHN COOLBAUGH etched in the panel. Right and left etchings are different patterns, all with military themes. The etches are 21 inches long from the ricasso. The blade measures 30-1/2 inches. There are some remnants of the original leather buffer remaining. The blade is bright with a couple of very minor dark spots that do not significantly detract. The edges are not sharp by design and have not been dinged or abused.
The 31-1/2 inch scabbard is perfectly fitted to the sword with matching top (front - rear) and center (front - rear) hanger attachments with solid moveable mounting rings and a matching drag (front - rear), all in gilded brass. The sword in the scabbard measures 39 inches long overall. There is some darkness on the steel from where the original thin silver wash has tarnished or worn off. The name and unit of Captain Coolbaugh etch is between the hangers on the outside.
This is a superlative example of the late 19th century presentation dress sword and would be an outstanding addition to any American sword collection.
Offered at $5,499.99

McKenney &Co., (Baker & McKenney)) Manufacturers of and Dealers in Military Goods in the late 19th century located in New York City. It is complete and intact including the original silver grips and twisted pair gilded wire wrap around the grips.
The sword has a folding clam-shell style guard, with the Federal war eagle (facing the arrows) surrounded by six flags on the right side guard and Federal shield on a stand of arms on the folding left side guard. The left side guard is retained in the open position by a robust button release. The knuckle bow is very fancy with the bow and finial having laurel and floral embellishments. The knuckle bow has laurel leaves. The pommel has a shield on one side and war eagle on the other side.
The blade has Ridabock & Co., New York, NY maker mark etched on the left side at the ricasso. Both sides of the blade are etched with military motifs with U.S. markings, US flags, stacks of arms and the name Lieutenant Alfred S. Orchard presentation 23rd Regt. N.G.S.N.Y and date 10 July 1983 etched in the panel. Right and left etchings are different patterns, all with military themes. The etches are 16-1/2 inches long from the ricasso. The blade measures 30-3/4 inches. The blade is bright with no defects or significant darkness. The edges are not sharp by design and have not been dinged or abused. These are overall views of right and left of the sword and scabbard.
The 32 inch scabbard is perfectly fitted to the sword with matching top and center hanger attachments with solid moveable mounting rings and a matching drag, all in gilded brass. There are some very minor dings on the drag from routine carry. The sword in the scabbard measures 38 inches long overall. There is a C.S. stamped inspector marking near the throat.
The sword comes complete with the gold bullion belt with hangers and N.Y. gilt on brass buckle. It is faintly maker marked M. C. LILLY 13 W. 30th ST. NEW YORK on the back of the buckle protector.
