General officer stars and colonel's eagles are an interesting segment of military collectables. The number of variations from manufacturer to manufacturer, and even variations within a single company over a period of years result in a huge number of differing styles, designs, and modifications.
Shown here are a number of examples. Some were sent by specific and identified officers and are accompanied a signed letter or signature clip which would make the basis of a nice display when appropriately mounted and framed.
Where possible, eagle pairs have been matched by maker and style. We also have a number of single eagles that will eventually be listed. General stars are SINGLES unless stated otherwise.

The stars are identical to the ones shown in the 11 by 14 inch official portrait photograph. The signature is a 6-1/8 by 1-1/4 inch clip, signed "Very Sincerely Yours, Mason M. Patrick, Major General, A.S." The clip and black quill pen signed signature are in excellent condition. Each measures 25mm (1 inch). They have simple hook closures. USGS-11 WWII USAAF General Officer Star Insignia (PROTOTYPE) |
This is a pair of brigadier general officer gold bullion star on blue
felt insignia.
In 1944, the US Army Air Force contracted a series of prototype officer insignia in bullion on blue felt. These included wings and officer rank insignia. One of the rarest and most difficult insignia to find was the GOLD bullion general officer stars. General Hap Arnold did not like the way the gold looked on either wings or bullion, and quickly deactivated the plans to mass produce them for distribution. It has no makermarks and a stiffened cheese cloth back to support the bullion. This is a gutter pair and measures 2-1/2 by 5-1/2 inches. It was intended to be cut and used as two single stars.
