Historical Military Edged Weapons

Military edged weapons are among the most legible objects a collector can hold. Their form was set by doctrine and by regulation, so a blade's shape, length, and fittings usually record what an army wanted it to do and when.

This page treats the field as a set of documented categories rather than a chronological survey: daggers, bayonets, fighting knives, trench weapons, swords, and the unusual blades that sit outside those groups. The organizing idea is that military edged weapons changed for reasons, and those reasons are readable in the object. When infantry doctrine moved from the massed bayonet charge toward fire and maneuver, bayonets grew shorter. When commando and airborne units needed a silent killing tool rather than a general-purpose knife, the pure stiletto reappeared. When cavalry ceased to be a shock arm, the saber became a ceremonial object almost overnight. Reading a blade means reading that history, and it is also the surest defense against the reproductions that crowd this part of the market.

Bayonets: the clearest case of form following regulation

The bayonet began as a stopgap. The earliest form was the plug bayonet of the seventeenth century, a knife with a tapered wooden grip jammed directly into the musket muzzle. It turned the firearm into a spear at the cost of being able to fire it. The socket bayonet solved that by fitting around the outside of the barrel and leaving the bore clear, and for more than a century the slim triangular socket blade was the infantry standard. Every later change in bayonet form is a change away from that baseline, and each one records a decision about what the bayonet was for.

No category records changing doctrine as plainly as the bayonet. The socket bayonet of the musket era gave way in the nineteenth century to the sword bayonet, a long blade that doubled as a short sword and reflected a belief in the bayonet as a battlefield weapon in its own right. The First World War carried that belief to its extreme and then broke it. The British Pattern 1907 sword bayonet for the Lee-Enfield carried a blade well over a foot long, and the German 98/05 was longer still, a broad blade collectors nicknamed the butcher blade. By the Second World War the trend had reversed completely, toward short knife bayonets such as the cut-down blade the United States adopted when it shortened its long M1905 bayonet into the M1 pattern. The blade got shorter because its job had shrunk from a primary weapon to a last-resort tool.

Because bayonets were made in enormous numbers to tight government specifications, they are also the category where markings matter most and mislead most. Ricasso stamps, pattern numbers, unit or rack marks, and national acceptance stamps are all present on genuine pieces and all forgeable. Cole's series exist precisely so a mark can be checked against a documented pattern rather than trusted on sight.

Fighting knives and daggers

The purpose-built fighting knife is largely a twentieth-century development, and the Second World War is its defining period. The archetype is the British Fairbairn-Sykes fighting knife, designed by William Fairbairn and Eric Sykes from their experience policing Shanghai and produced from 1941 by Wilkinson Sword and others. It is a slender double-edged stiletto made for the thrust, issued to commandos and special forces, and produced in several successive patterns whose differences are a study in themselves. The United States fielded its own answers, the slim M3 trench knife of 1943 for troops not issued a bayonet, the V-42 stiletto made for the First Special Service Force, and above all the Marine Corps utility knife of 1942 and 1943 that collectors know as the KA-BAR, a heavier clip-point blade meant to be a tool as much as a weapon. The name KA-BAR belongs to one of the makers rather than to the pattern, which is a useful reminder that a wartime knife often went to several contractors at once and that the what a collector actually identifies is the contractor's mark on the blade, not a popular nickname.

These knives also show how doctrine drove design in miniature. The commando stiletto was optimized for a single act, the silent thrust. It kept a narrow double-edged blade and a slender grip and gave up almost everything else. The Marine utility knife went the other way, trading some killing efficiency for a blade that could open a ration tin, cut brush, and pry, because the man carrying it needed a tool far more often than he needed a dagger. Two knives issued in the same years to allied forces embody opposite answers to the same question, and the object records which answer its designers chose.

Daggers divide into two families that a collector should never conflate: fighting daggers built to be used, and dress daggers built to be worn. Twentieth-century armies produced large numbers of ceremonial and dress daggers whose value lies in insignia, finish, and maker, and whose identification is a matter of hilt fittings and etching rather than combat function. The distinction matters because the two are authenticated differently. A fighting dagger is judged on blade, grip, and honest wear; a dress dagger is judged on its hardware, its plating, and the correctness of its decorative marks, all of which are heavily reproduced.

Trench weapons

The trench weapons of 1914 to 1918 are a category unto themselves, sitting between the improvised and the issued. Knuckle knives, push daggers, sharpened stakes, and studded clubs were made in unit workshops and by commercial cutlers alike, and many carry no government mark at all. The emblematic issued example is the American M1918 Mark I, with its one-piece cast knuckle handle and skull-crusher pommel. Countless privately made clubs and knives are its unmarked cousins. Military swords: from weapon to regalia

The sword shows form following function at the point where the function disappeared. Cavalry sabers were serious weapons into the early twentieth century, and the last generation of them is instructive. The United States adopted the Model 1913 cavalry saber on the eve of a war in which mounted shock action would prove obsolete. It was a straight thrusting sword designed by a young George S. Patton and produced at the Springfield Armory. The British Pattern 1908 cavalry sword belongs to the same twilight. Within a few years the saber had become almost entirely a dress and ceremonial object, and most later military swords are regalia. For the collector this means most swords are identified and valued as pattern objects: by the marks and etching on the blade, the form of the hilt and guard, the scabbard fittings, and the pattern designation, rather than by any evidence of use.

Unusual and edge-case blades

Beyond the main categories lies a long tail of purpose-made blades: machetes and bolo knives issued for jungle and utility work, entrenching tools with a cutting edge, fascine and pioneer knives, and heavier survival and clearance blades such as the smatchet associated with Fairbairn. These objects are easy to overlook and easy to misattribute, because their forms overlap with civilian tools and because they were often made by ordinary tool contractors. They reward the same discipline as the rest of the field: identify the pattern, check the maker and acceptance markings against a documented reference, and be suspicious of a common tool dressed up with military marks it may not have carried when it was made.

Identification and the reproduction problem

Across every category above, authentication follows one method. Read the object first: blade profile, cross section, and grind; tang and grip construction; hilt or guard form; and the scabbard as a separate object with its own marks. Read the markings second, and always against a documented reference rather than on trust, because a stamp is the single easiest feature to forge. Weigh how hard each feature is to fake, and give the hard-to-fake features the most weight: correct blade geometry and steel, casting behavior consistent with period methods, and honest wear that falls where a real weapon is handled. Museum collections make this possible.
